Introduction:
The role of psychology and psychologist in sports has grown exponentially over the past few years. Routinely, individual athletes, their families, amateur and professional teams employ the services of psychologists that possess an expertise in sports-related topics. Increasingly, athletes and sport teams rely upon the contributions of sports psychology and psychologists to help them enhance performance.
This workshop will review the current approaches used by sports psychologists to enhance the performance of athletes. An argument will be made that athletes comprise a unique cultural group, one that possesses all of the essential elements. Athletes will present information that addresses the sources of interference for suboptimal performance. A particular focus will revolve around athletes that sustain concussions, and the state-of-the-art approaches used to return these athletes to play, safely.
This course is designed for healthcare professionals. The material will be presented at the intermediate level. Students are welcome to attend. The target audience will be psychologists, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physicians, coaches, and school administrators that oversee athletic activities or departments. The material presented will represent an amalgram of current research in the area of sports psychology and the presentors’ own clinical and research experiences in this field.
