Clinical Supervision Workshop
Ethics and Skills for Enhanced Competence
With the recognition that supervision is a distinct professional practice has come the specific guidelines and practice standards. This course is designed to provide participants a framework of competence-based supervision, including the most current perspectives and developments, experiential exercises, vignettes, and problem-solving exercises. Content includes a review of targeted areas of supervisory skill to focus on enhanced competence through attention to knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Lecture, discussion, videos and experiential exercises are included.
Emphasis will be on presenting evidenced practice and will include discussion of the means to advance the practice and the scientific study of clinical supervision. The theoretical framework is competency-based and integrates evidence-based developmental, strength-based, process and multicultural perspectives. Clear guidelines are discussed in respect to legal and ethical frameworks and best practices are presented to address supervisees who do not meet competence criteria.
In keeping with a competency-based orientation, specific knowledge, skills and attitudes/values assembled to form aspects of supervisory competence will be identified. Guidelines are drawn from the Board of Educational Affairs(APA) supervision guidelines and from the ASPPB Supervision Guidelines that respectively address education and training, and regulatory concerns. Following this introduction, specific domains of the supervision process and supervisor competence will be presented.
