Description: Group Therapy for Men with Sexual Trauma
Men who have experienced sexual trauma, whether as children, adolescents or adults, often suffer a variety of symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, sexual avoidance or compulsive sexual behavior, and difficulty trusting others. However, men are often reluctant to talk about their feelings, especially about having been victimized. This can leave them feeling isolated and alone with their pain.
Individual psychotherapy is an excellent first step in healing. The unjust shame often felt by victims can be dealt with in a safe and confidential relationship. A natural next step is to enlarge the number of people who know and understand the survivor’s experience. Group therapy with men who share a similar history allows for additional healing of deep pain and shame, and for the discovery of inner strength and outer resources. This foundation supports the survivor in opening up to family, friends and others without shame.
This therapy group is designed for men 25 or older who have been in, or are currently in, individual psychotherapy regarding their trauma, and who have not abused a child or assaulted someone themselves.
The group leader is Lee Blackwell, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist who has been leading groups for over 40 years. He was Co-Director of the UCLA Human Sexuality Program for 10 years, and chaired three conferences on Treatment of the Sexual Problems of Adults molested as Children.
