Decolonizing Mental Health Treatment - CE

Colonialism has been associated with the violent imposition and overestimation of Western values on those subject to it.  A cultural overestimation of Western values may be seen in a variety of social systems, including those in the political, economic, educational, health care and religious spheres.  As a result of the overestimation of Western values, a non-inclusive practice of psychology may have led to further oppression of the historically colonized.  This two hour workshop will contextualize the present mental health model, define colonization and decolonization, and provide practical clinical and institutional interventions to address the decolonizing of the mental health field.

By the end of the workshop, the attendees can:

1.     Identify two examples of colonization.
2.     Describe at least two Western cultural values that have affected mental health treatment.
3.     List three mental health interventions both at a personal and institutional level.
