Course Description: This is a monthly reading and discussion course.

The amazing work of the French psychoanalyst, Jean Laplanche , now orients us towards
multiple profound foundations of our profession that have only been intuitively grasped by Freud and
others, but have never before been articulated. This course takes us directly to the cutting edge of all
forms of psychotherapy today - no matter what theory or technique one practices.

It is by now widely understood that when Freud “abandoned the seduction hypothesis“ in 1897
that he was not saying that many people have not been molested, but that from the standpoint
of treatment, it was important to look at the unconscious fantasies involved in the experiences
of seduction in order to begin understanding their impact upon us.
Freud understood that the primary seduction was in infancy either before birth or in the first
few months of life, but he did not understand by whom or how. What has become clear over
time is that the universal, normal and expectable ministrations of parental figures provide
intrusions (seductions) into the developing mind of the infant. Said differently, Laplanches’s
“fundamental anthropological situation” points out that a non-sexualized being, a baby, is
surrounded by sexualized caregivers. As the caregiver manages the child, there are many
messages that come from the unconscious sexuality of the parents and others that are enigmatic
intromissions into the mind of the child. That is, the child has its own coding for milk and
physical soothing, but the child cannot understand that the mother's breast and hands are also
sexualized organs associated with many experiences and unconscious sexual fantasies of her
own. These intromissions afforded by early caregiving provide the seduction that Freud was
looking for, and that Laplanche has elaborated for us.
All of these new provocations have profound implications for how we practice
psychotherapy and they will be looked at in detail through this course.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course the participants will be able to:
1. State what is meant by “après coup”.
2. Explain what is meant by “new foundations“.
3. Elaborate what is meant by the “exigence” of Psychoanalysis.
4. Explain why Freud “abandoned the seduction hypothesis” in 1897.
5. State the difference between the general theory of seduction and the specific theory of
seduction.
6. Give three simple examples that illustrate infantile sexual seduction.
7. Name the two kinds of repression.
8. State why infantile sexuality essentially characterizes the primary repressed
unconscious.
9. List the three great narcissistic injuries to the human race.
10. Explain the differences between gender, sex, and the sexual.
11. State how the analyst provokes transference.
12. State what is unfinished about the Copernican revolution.
13. Explain why Freud was unable to formulate the infantile seduction theory.
14. Explain why our repressed unconscious is determined by “otherness”.
15. State why the workings of the human unconscious will never be fully known.
