Science of Happiness

A Focus on what Constitutes Happiness and its impact on Physical Health, Longevity and Overall Quality of Life.

Course Description:

Considering that happiness constitutes positive affect, hopefulness, optimism and confidence, there is an abundance of scientific evidence demonstrating a positive relationship between happiness, health and longevity.  That includes the effect of happiness on cardiovascular, inflammatory, neurodegenerative disorders, and ultimately the increased life expectancy.

In this 2-hour workshop I will cover a review of scientific studies that address the significant protective factor of happiness impacting on health, as well as psychological techniques to promote and maintain happiness.  

Promoting psychological states such as positive emotions, mindfulness, hopefulness, purposeful living, as well as a discipline, physical exercise, healthy sleep habits, nutritionally dense diet and forming healthy social relationships will be discussed.  

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define four mental states that constitute happiness.
  2. Identify or list five psychological factors associated with developing happiness in life.
  3. Define two effective psychotherapy modalities/interventions that increase the level of happiness in one’s life.
  4. Identify three learned habits and skills related to a happy state of mind.

2-hour C.E. timeline:

  1. 15-minutes: Definitions and criteria constituting happiness.

  1. 10-minute video:  TED talk regarding longest study on happiness by Harvard University; Dr. Robert Waldinger.  

  1. 40-minutes:  Review of scientific studies of happiness and its effect on the following:

  • General physical health
  • Inflammatory disorders
  • Cardiovascular disorders
  • Brain health and neurodegenerative disorders
  • Marital relationships
  • Social relationships
  1. 30-minutes:  Effective psychological treatment modalities to promote happiness.

I will focus on:

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy
  • Behavior Therapy
  • Positive psychology
  1. 10-minutes:  Spiritual practices and happiness.

  1. 15-minutes: Questions and Answers.

Nina Rodd, Ph.D., is a clinical and forensic psychologist practicing in Newport Beach, California.  She received two Master's Degrees from Loyola Marymount in Education and Psychology in 1978 and 1981, her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Alliant University in 1994, and had a one-year postdoctoral training in neuropsychology at Fielding University, 2015. Her work since 2000 has included performing psychological and neuropsychological assessments within the outpatient, inpatient and forensic arena, and testifying as an expert witness over 100 times.   

Dr. Rodd's background as a family, child therapist, school psychologist in 1980s and 1990s and later as a psychologist, always fascinated her with the relationship between the individuals’ emotional state, their neuropsychological functioning, physical and social functioning.

Please note that APA CE rules require that we give credit only to those who attend the entire workshop. Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time or leaving before the workshop is completed will not receive CE credits.
