OCPA Workshop - CE “Bi+ Affirmative Psychotherapy: Working with Bisexual, Pansexual, and Fluid Clients” by Dr. Mimi Hoang Saturday, October 19, 2024 Course Description Bisexual, pansexual, and sexually fluid (or “bi+”) people make up nearly 60% of the LGBTQIA+ population, yet face the greatest health disparities and are the least likely to be out. This presents an important quandary for psychotherapists working with individuals, couples, youth, or families, and sets an even greater impetus to gain LGBT cultural competence in working with this underserved and often invisible community. This presentation covers basic terms and definitions, models of bi+ identity development, issues of homophobia, biphobia and bi+ erasure, important bisexual health and mental health disparities, and applicable tools for becoming a more bi+ affirmative clinician. 5 Learning Objectives Based on the content of this workshop, it will help you: Bio Dr. Mimi Hoang (she/her) is an internationally-recognized psychologist, life coach, and educator specializing in the LGBTQ+ and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Since the 1990s, she has co-founded three organizations in Los Angeles for bisexual, pansexual, and fluid (AKA "bi+") individuals - the Los Angeles Bi+ Task Force, amBi Los Angeles, and Fluid at UCLA. Dr. Mimi has authored multiple publications and earned a seat at the landmark 2013 White House Bisexual Community Roundtable in which she presented on bi+ mental health disparities and this later sparked her focus on bi+ affirmative counseling and mental health. Her steadfast leadership has earned her multiple awards and recognitions, including being listed in Go Magazine's "100 Women We Love: Class of 2023" and being named “One of the Most Significant Women in the Bisexual Movement.” Dr. Mimi currently is the owner of Living in Color Therapy and works as the Program Coordinator of the LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Therapy Center at Airport Marina Counseling Services, and is the creator of the "Bi on Life" self-empowerment series.
